There many genres that are really big in western markets now; MMORPGs, FPS, RTS, Free to Play RPG, Social RPGs. I agree with the author in that these are not going anywhere anytime soon. MMORPG and RTS are still driving many PC purchases for gamers. There's still enough interest in Rift, WoW, Starcraft and Command and Conquer to keep these brands around for a while. Even if the graphics get better and the PCs get faster, the way that these games play, for the most part, has been pretty standard.
I think that by allowing more customization, companies could spice up the games even more. Games like Mass Effect, Guild Wars 2 and Rift have upped the ante for customized RPG games. I hope more games do this going forward. It increases replay-ability.
