This seems like a case of Nintendo look at the global market from a narrow Japanese viewpoint. The overpriced handheld device that launched last year, fumbled big time after E3. Yes, the recent price drop in the fall helped out some, but no matter what, the system is still not doing well and many studios just have lost interest in it.
Now that people are starting to talk about dev kits for the next generation systems, the focus has shifted to that and of course to mobile and tablet based games as well. What is the future for handhelds? Who knows, but Nintendo needs to wake up and smell the coffee. This continuous trend of only trying to focus on social and kiddie games as your main bread and butter has to stop. Other larger studios and publishers, as well as the overall market still see them as secondary to the more hardcore, action oriented games. And they feel that they can hit a much larger audience with mobile and tablet games than handhelds.
