As the media built up the hype about the Old Republic, normal gamers, have quietly been playing the game. A lot. Many of my MMO friends are playing it. I cannot jump into another subscription based MMO. I just don't have the time to play them anymore so its not worth it to me. And I get bored of these games quickly because if you don't have a regular group of friends to do things with, then the game gets boring fast. Also, if you are not part of a guild, it gets boring fast. Now, I'm not saying that the game is boring to everyone, this is just from my own personal experience from playing MMOs. I think the fact that these new MMOs are keeping the level caps to reasonable levels (DCUO-30, Old Republic-50, RIFT-50) as compared to WoW (90!!!!), it keeps it fresh because players can easily create a new character and level them up quickly and not have to worry about the long, boring grind that WoW has become known for. New content that benefits everyone is also a key for these new MMOs. Games like WoW still cater to the extreme, experienced players who are already at the level cap. For example, DCUO and SWTOR DLC adds on levels and missions for certain level ranges. That is a win win for both advanced and casual players.
The game will probably never be the WoW killer that the media has made it out to be, but if EA/Bioware can keep a few million people in it all of the time, then I think that would be great for its longevity.
