Game pricing is in a state of flux

With the current battle between video games as a physical unit and as downloadable content, its interesting to see that the debate on pricing is still an issue. The one thing that I just don't get is why US companies are so hell bent on having games be $60 for console versions no matter what the content is. I am growing tired of having to shell that much out in order to get a gimped single player mode, just so that i can have a multiplayer element. I do like the strategy of having a cheaper game ($30-40) and then adding on additional features in the end through an online marketplace. That way at least, gamers wont feel screwed when the buy the main game (ie Bioshock 2).
